Much ado about comments
I remember when I started blogging, there were days when I would lurk in my own blog waiting for someone to drop me a note to say how trashy I write, or how inept my views are. I got nothing.
I even went out my way of designing a threatening sidebar graphic advising chance-upon-ers to leave a comment or else...
And another...
It generated a couple of comments and I was glad.
(I lovingly commend Khrisna because he was one of those two who left me my first comments. He said something like don't fret because people do visit you without you knowing it, or something like that. He suggested that I install sitemeter and I did. Too bad my free subscription ran out already.)
I have yet to realize my dream of getting a minimum comments of around 100 per post. Haha. But because it's near to impossible, I'm contented receiving comments from my ever faithful blogging friends, a network of OFW bloggers who, more or less, dig my wayward thoughts. Again, I thank you guys.
What works in commenting and what doesn't? I'll share you my personal thoughts.
1. Network is built on the first six months. During the first six months that you're blogging, you should already have a decent number of blogging friends who would faithfully read and leave you a comment in your posts. If not, see 3 below.
2. If you write faithfully, diligently and with a heart, comments will come. I noticed that Pinoy bloggers react to heart-warming, well-thought of and funny posts. And somehow, I don't know why, it shows whether a post has come from a heart or if it's written half-heartedly. (I sometimes write half-heartedly and I can sense that my readers sense it too).
3. Leave comments in other blogs. This is the surest way to invite someone to your network, or to join in someone else's network. But like writing your posts, your comments should also be done with a heart. It will show whether you're just plainly leaving a comment to get a backlink or whether you're commenting because you honestly liked the post.
4. Commenters also read your comments. They do. (Before I comment on someone else's post, I read first the previous comments. If I find someone's comment interesting, I make a note to visit the blog). Based on your comments, they will come and visit you. Based on your posts, they will either stay on and leave a comment and be back on your next post, or they will flee.
5. We are whatever we write so it's good to re-read what we write before we click 'publish'. I believe that most, if not all, bloggers, especially Pinoy bloggers, are intelligent, sensitive beings. Most of them actually read (not browse) what we write. (I fall prey to grammar and spelling mistakes and for that, I ask your forgiveness, guys! Too, don't be deceived by my guru-esque tone; believe me, I know very little. I'm just a little observant, that's all.)
As Darren Rowse of Problogger wrote: Comments have the ability to build up or tear down your reputation. They are a permanent record of who you are and what you stand for - so take care - be gracious - make sure they add value (not only to the blog you’re visiting but also to your own online profile).

for me, its not that important whether i have commentors or wala sa mga blog entries ko... i dont write because i have to put up this certain image of myself.. i write to express myself..kahit may comments ako or wala, id still continue writing as long as i feel like writing... but then again, i can say na nakakataba ng puso kapag may mga nababasa akong comments in my posts..
and i dont make it a habit to drop a line n somebody else's comment page if hindi ko nababasa yung entry nya... kabastusan ang tingin ko dun ahihihihi

ako naman nagbloblog para to share and to let other people be inspired, or happy or laugh, at just like yanah, to express myself.

i like mga light or patawa na blogs without resorting to "green" stories or theme and swear or use foul languages... and of course informative at inspirational.
your blog falls to the category of information para saken...and a few times inspirational. di pa ako natawa sa blog mo nebzki, pero natutuwa! nyehehe
totoo kuya... u have to do everything to please the readers kung gusto mo ng comment... but the surest way, just write from the heart. dahil madaling marecognize ung write-ups pag sinamahan ng PUSO.
i agree with yanah, may mga taong nagsusulat dahil gusto lang magexpress ng sarili. gusto nilang gawing outlet ang pagsusulat. and they don't care kung may magcomment o wala.
masarap gawing hobby ang magsulat. magaling ka man o hinde. may magreact man o wala. ang mahalaga naman kase kung ano ang gusto mo... hindi kung ano ang gusto nila sa mga ginawa mo.

Whew! Kailangan ko ba talagang mag-comment?! Tsk, tsk, tsk. Iisa lang ang masasabi ko: kapag nabasa ko ang isang post nag-iiwan talaga ako ng comment based sa naiisip ko at that very moment. Kasi talagang may maiisip naman tayo di ba?

[Paano naman po kung mangyari ang katulad ng pagkakamaling nagawa ko sa The Sandbox kahapon. Whew! Nahiya talaga ako kay Mr. Blogusvox kasi tinawag ko siyang "Kuya Nebz" sa comment ko sa post niyang Buhay Buhangin (Sn 18). Geographically kasi, magkakalapit po kayo dyan kaya medyo nalito po ako. Tulad n'yan nagbanggit po kayo ng 'personal thoughts' naisip ko na naman ang Thoughtskoto. Huhmn.]

Pero totoo un. Binabasa rin ng bloggers ang comments ng iba. Minsan nga me mga comment exchanges na mas enjoyable pang basahin kesa dun sa post mismo. (Lalo n kapag me intriga, sagutan o away...hehehe).

like most i dont really care kung may comment ba or wala ang entry ko but of course nakakatuwa if meron.

Ilang beses ko n ring naranasan ang d mgkaroon ng comment. Masakit din minsan. Pero sige lang, bira lang ng bira. Pasasaan ba't magsasawa din ako...haha.
Kung nabasa ko ang post ng isang blog and I'm not intrigue, I don't place a comment. But if do write one, I make sure it's sincere. Wither its a positive or a negative comment, I let the owner know that I acknowledge his/her writing. That's an "unwritten" protocol of blogging.
Ang hindi ko lang gusto e...
1. Yung mga duwag. Lambaste your post then sign in Anonymous.
2. Make an advertisement instead of commenting.
3. Yung mga "TH". Asking you to include them in your blogrole then have the guts to tell you to inform them so they'll put you too on theirs.
These are signs that they don't know better.

I agree to most of what you said and ouch dun sa 'TH' part dahil I just did it yesterday to one Pinoy blogger. Hindi ko na uulitin.
I am trying very hard to honestly comment on every post that I read. And so far naman, I guess whoever reads my comments in other blogspots will say na I'm gracious. I hope.

But, like in life, they can't really put a good man...er, woman...er blog...down. So I guess no matter how less (or how plentiful), no matter how good (or how bad) the feedbacks to our posts are, tuloy pa rin as long as we are honest with our work and we can stand by our words.
