Them six could have helped us sooner

Them who ran for President...their millions could have saved more a lot sooner. What a total waste of money!
Between November 2009 and January 2010, the candidates are said to have spent around PHP991 million in advertisements.

Aquino P127m
Estrada P41m
Gordon P119m
Teodoro P184m
Villanueva P44m
Villar P475m

Imagine this.

That's equivalent to around 2,643 classrooms

A 49sqm classroom, according to CGMA, can cost around $4000 or PHP375k each.

That's equivalent to around 8,946 Gawad Kalinga houses

A Gawad Kalinga home according to www.ancop.ca costs $2,500 which covers the basic materials for a 200-250 sq. ft. home. Labor cost comes free from beneficiary and volunteers. Site development costs for deep wells, pavements, sewer systems) and peripheral costs (multi-purpose halls, playgrounds) come on top of the $2,500).

Or perhaps educational scholarships for 3-million poor children

The amount can provide elementary to high school education for around 3 million poor children (based on my reading of World Vision's site that an annual sponsorship of PHP7,200 can send one child to school).

Or give 6,500 families their own business

If the candidates will distribute their spendings to all, more than 6,500 poor families can have their own business.

That could mean 826 families will have a Rice in a Box franchise, 330 families will have Zagu Pearl's, 5,300 families can have food cart business (i.e. small noodle station, a lapaz batchoy stand, hot pares special eatery, etc).

Too sosyal? Then, let's calculate it this way: Lend each family PHP100k to put up a business, that's more than 9,000 families.

Too bad our politicians view of 'serving the Filipino people' is so twisted that all of them live by this trite and contempti-bull only-if-I-am-elected-will-I-be-able-to-help-the-many notion. They have in fact doubled that amount during the period of February and April 2010.

Teodoro P49m
Villanueva P8m
Villar P412m

Them six could have helped a lot of Pinoys sooner.  But they opted to run as our President instead.  Scary.

Kung ginamit nila ang perang yan sa pagtulong imbes na sa pangangampanya siguro baka maniwala pa ang mga tao na tutuparin nila ang mga pangako nila...

  2. witsandnuts says:

I can just imagine them computing for the payback period. Lalo na yung kay Villar.

  3. ganun na pala kalaki nagagastos nila...wowwwwwwwww!

  4. Chico Rojo says:

It's really scary since a 6 year term is not enough to recover that amount of money unless they will corrupt.

That's why Parliamentary Democracy is best suited to Third World Countries like the Philippines. If we're on a parliamentary system, the candidates will only talk about their platforms, people will vote for them because of their platforms not because they're popular. Candidates will never spend billions of pesos just to be elected. We should seriously consider changing our system. But that's impossible considering that Oligarchs will never allow change.. they're for status quo to protect their investments at the expense of the large majority.

abangan na lang natin ang susunod na kabanata kapag nanalo na sila. i hope ay kung paano nila ginamit sa ads ay ganun din ang gawin nila sa pagtulong sa bayan.

  7. Lots of money here that could have indeed helped our poor countrymen. Politics is like that...the trapos consider it as a gamble

  8. Savvy says:

I have never heard of this Villar dude, but spending 400 something million on ads is pretty ridiculous. Just that little teeny fact says a few things to me: he is self centered, he is in it for the glory, and most likely the money.

I pray for my native country. I just sorry that my vote does not count legally.

  9. Francesca says:

if a person is rich, he doesnt care spending those, because by a tick of a pen, he can get it back. Legally ot illegally, no one knows.
But the poor to spend all those, utang yun, utang na loob, bayaran sa taxes ng mga mamamayan.

Ive been in rich country working as a maid nga lang, but i saw how the rich lives. They dont bother spending, while the poor says, teka muna.

Life is unfair. Now that noynoy wins, hala, abangan na lang ang kabanata, ilan yung nautangan niya to run as president, kelan nya bayaran yun, and we will see.

Meanwhile, tayong mga OFW hala buhayin ang pamilya kasi bagsak ang social services ng bansa natin.Nag babayad utang pa gobyerno eh.

Ang ganda ng article na ito ah. Thanks.

Sana kung ginamit na lang nilang pantulong ito, kahit ipagsigawan pa nila sa buong Pinas na sila ang nagpagawa nito ay naka-two birds in one stone pa sila. Na-advertise nila ang kanilang pangalan and at the same time nakatulong sila sa Pinas. Hindi pa in vain lahat ng kanilang ginastos.

Masasabi pa nila kung natalo sila "Panalo pa rin ako dahil nakatulong ang aking pag-kampanya sa nakararami."
